Thoughts of suicide are common, around 1 in 5 of us have them.
Sadly, sometimes those thoughts turn into a plan, the plan turns into actions and those actions cost people their lives; understanding more about why these thoughts occur and how to communicate them either as the affected individual or as a listener is vital to saving lives.
Did you know that most people who think about take their life by suicide let others know, consciously or unconsciously? According to research up to 75% of those who died by suicide indicate their suicidal intentions to others either directly or indirectly in the weeks before their death. This means there are a range of warning signs that may suggest someone is at risk of suicide which is why it is so important for people to be familiar with these.
Knowing the signs and how to respond saves lives.
According to Health & Safety Executive (HSE) figures, 18% of reported work-related illnesses in the UK construction industry are the result of mental health problems such as stress, depression or anxiety and account for 400,000 working days lost each year.
